Watch me clean my teeth. Really.

If you’ve been reading my blog, you know I already wrote a long article about dental hygiene, my kids, and the fancy new toothbrush I got. If not, pop over and read How I Clean My Teeth.

Back? Great.

So you know that Braun / Oral-B sent me this sophisticated power toothbrush to try out and write about. Oh, its formal name? It’s a mouthful: Oral-B ProfessionalCare SmartSeries 5000 with SmartGuide.

Anyway, as the below video demonstrates — yes, I made a video about cleaning my teeth — I’m pretty darn hard on my toothbrushes, pushing too hard and trashing them quickly. I also have a tendency to brush for a random length of time, somewhere between 30 seconds and three minutes.

Both of those problems are solved with the SmartSeries 5000 power toothbrush: the first because there’s a sensor that changes color and a little unhappy face that shows up on the timer if I push too hard (rather clever, that) and the latter because the toothbrush starts a 120 second timer once you turn it on, split into four 30-second zones. Lower left, lower right, upper left, upper right, you get the idea.

And the “SmartGuide”? That’s a separate little battery-powered display and timer that I’ve just stuck to my bathroom mirror. It’s actually useful, particularly for the kids who definitely have a tendency to fly through their brushing in just seconds…

See? I really did make a video about cleaning my teeth. Awesome. I think my next video will be a tutorial on how to tie your shoes. But it might be too complicated. 🙂

More seriously, as I say at the very end of the video, I really do dig this new Oral-B power toothbrush. It turns the tedium of cleaning my teeth into something rather interesting, and there’s no question that my teeth end up way cleaner than with my cheapo manual brush.

Oh, and it turns out that British comedian Rhod Gilbert has an entire comedy skit about his girlfriend getting him this very toothbrush. Quite hilarious, and doubly so since I have the same darn brush! Well, watch it, see what you think: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DO5VjcoJtT8

Anyway, if you are interested in this slick toothbrush or are trying to figure out the perfect Christmas present for your boyfriend (as long as it’s not Rhod), move fast: Oral-B’s offering a $10 mail in rebate until June 16, 2012. Details: oralb.com

Do I need to disclaim that they sent this toothbrush to me? Okay, I just did. And you can find Oral-B on Facebook and Twitter by, well, clicking on the appropriate words in this very sentence.

Me? I’m going to go clean my teeth again. Just in case…

  1. New here, but browsing your site.

And, dang, I’d love for Oral-B to send me a toothbrush to try! I switched to a sonicare toothbrush from a manual one about 9 years ago, mainly for the reasons that you indicate: I brushed WAY to hard, and even though I wasn’t getting cavities, I was giving hell to my gums. But that workhorse Sonicare has almost given up the ghost.

I truly believe in electric toothbrushes.
