At first blush, the idea seems a bit daft, but after trying it, it’s brilliant: a Web site that lets you create your own custom muesli (granola) mix based on dozens of organic ingredients.
Welcome to MixMyOwn.com, where they offer just that capability through a fun and easy interactive Web site.
Based in Nevada, I had a chance to meet the company founder at a recent event in Denver, where he hooked me up with a discount code to give them a try. And so for $26 we bought two 1-pound bags of custom muesli, one for me, one for my 17yo daughter A-. Predictably, hers was more healthy, containing red wheat, rye, barley, oats, triticale, flaxseed, goji berries, mulberries, chia seeds, coconut and matcha green tea.
In a bowl it wasn’t exactly thrilling in appearance to me:
But she insists it’s delicious and I do have to admit it’s rather tasty and certainly crazy healthy.
My mix? I oped for a preselected mix that contains cashews, flaxseed, pumpkin seeds, red wheat, rye, barley, oats, triticale, currants, quinoa, bananas, coconut and apricots. To me, it looks far more tasty and inviting:
In both cases, the 1-pound bags are plenty enough for a few weeks of rational breakfast portions (tip: use a smaller bowl when you have food) and the mixes are delicious.
Just as importantly, it’s quite educational to assemble your mix because the MixMyOwn.com site shows a nutritional label that updates each time you add or remove an ingredient, letting you isolate which are adding sugars, fats, carbs, etc.
My concern from the beginning was cost, but $26 covered two bags plus shipping, which compares quite favorably to the $8-$10 bags of fancy granola in the local market that are their mix, not your own. Buy more and the per-unit shipping gets cheaper and cheaper too, and the products are shipping in airtight ziplock packaging, so I imagine they have at least a few months of shelf life if you do want to do a bulk purchase.
My daughter and I both think that these are delicious additions to our set of breakfast options, and when we’ve run out, I know where I’ll be going for my next bowl fo muesli. I just need to figure out what I’d like to add for my next order!
