‘Twas the night before Christmas,
And all through the house,
Not a creature was stirring,
Except our hyper kitten Kiwi, alas.
Actually, it wasn’t the night before Christmas but rather a few days before the madness of Black Friday when I popped into the local Walmart to buy a copy of the new Xbox One game Forza Motorsport 5 and a few bags of M&M’s as part of the Buy, Snap and Redeem campaign going on now at local Walmart stores.
The campaign is a great example of how joint marketing between companies can be implemented through social technology, and it’s a pretty logical pairing too because if you’re playing the gorgeous game Forza 5 on your shiny new Xbox One (but don’t open it until Christmas morning, if you can wait that long) then a handful of M&M’s is a good choice to get you ready for the next fast-paced circuit.
What I found cool about the program isn’t just that it’s tied to a game that’s going to be incredibly popular with Xbox One owners (yes, it’s that good, and a perfect game to demonstrate the breathtaking graphics of the Xbox One), but that the way they implemented the program is darn interesting too.
Here’s the scoop: Head to your local Walmart and buy Forza Motorsport 5 and at least $8 worth of M&M’s (see their list for qualifying products before you go), circle the purchases on the receipt, then take a photograph of the receipt – including the store ID at the top – and send it as a text message to Walmart. They have a special number for these campaigns, 811811, and you need to also include the keyword “M&M” in your message. That’s it. In less than a day they’ll text you back a gift code worth $10 next time you shop at Walmart. Easy. It’s like getting all those delicious M&Ms for free, right? 🙂

You can see that they’re even color coordinated and color appropriate for Christmas too. Snazzy! Even though Peanut M&M’s are my fave, I decided to try the Peanut Butter M&M’s instead and they’re good too, but next time I’ll stick with the old school ones: Peanut M&M’s are still the best.
I don’t even need to ask my kids if they approve of the snack and I know they’re going to be very excited to try an Xbox One and Forza 5. And by the time they’re ready to make these sort of purchases themselves, this type of promotion will be the norm and they’ll be used to engaging with firms on a social level, whether it’s a Facebook like, an Instagram photo and hashtag or, in this instance, a text message to a specific number in return for a cash reward.

Having said all of that, I need to wrap this up and jump back in my new orange McLaren P1 (the car on the cover of Forza 5) because I need to crank up the Xbox One and take it for another spin! And if you aren’t partial to the McLaren, don’t worry, the game includes a staggering 200 different cars, all perfectly rendered, along with 14 different racing circuits, including Spa, Bathurst, Yas Marina, and Circuit de la Sarthe.
