Save on your cellphone and phone plan at Safeway

When you think of going to Safeway or another supermarket, you probably think about a quart of milk, some eggs and maybe a watermelon or some apples. But modern supermarkets are, well, super markets, and my local Safeway has a rather amazing range of products, far more than just produce and groceries.

Today we popped in and got batteries, boutique iced coffee from a local company, a hot chai from the in-store Starbucks, and nail polish for my daughter. We also stopped and had a look at something else that you might have never noticed: cellphones and cellphone plans.

Turns out that supermarkets work with carriers that offer considerably less expensive phones and plans that those from the major carriers. In fact, my Dad had a cellphone from his local supermarket that he used as a pay-as-you-go phone just for emergencies. After all, if you aren’t going to obsess about your cellphone, why pay for monthly service when you can pay per-megabyte or per-minute?

Here are just a few remarkably inexpensive cellphones from my local Safeway to consider:

Got a teen in the house? This can save your sanity, and that’s something I know every time my 18yo exceeds her allocation of our data plan and I have to then collect the overage costs from her each month. Instead, paying for 300 minutes/month or a small allocation of data would be soooo much easier. $19.99 and the NET10 LG 306 is yours, then you can simply pay for the data and cell service you need, however frequently you need to do so.

Those prepaid cards price out reasonably too:

As you can see, you can buy 300MB of data from TracFone for $10 or 60 minutes of talk / text / data for $19.99. It’s the latter that is very similar to what my Dad used, recharging his phone every 3-4 months for a total monthly cost of $7 or so. Quite a bit less than even the least expensive plan from the big guys who shall remain unnamed.

But wait, it gets better. Safeway’s running a promo right now where you get 10 fuel rewards for every dollar spent on wireless cards. For example, purchase a $50 wireless card and you just earned 500 fuel rewards. That’s a resultant discount of $0.50 off per gallon the next time you fill up. Buy 20 gallons of gas and you just saved $10. That’s a no brainer good deal running from 5/6 to 6/23 only at Safeway, and after the promo ends, prepaid wireless pays 2x gas rewards points.

There are a lot of scenarios where these prepaid plans make sense, including teens, seniors and even people who travel quite a bit. Do a bit of homework, you might be surprised. And the convenience of recharging by picking up a new prepaid card while you’re at the market picking up milk? That’s not such a bad thing either!
